Kahlil Gibran - The Garden Of The Prophet

January 20, 2019

I am so excited to announce my collaborations with the Immigration Museum's latest exhibition Kahlil Gibran - The Garden of the Prophet.

Other than being asked to participate as a community voice, I was also asked to create a soundscape for the exhibition! The music I put together references Kahlil Gibran's work and compliments the work exhibited.

On Saturday February 23, Gibran's Garden will take place in the Immigration Museum's Courtyard.

More information here:

As a special treat during our Summer of Love at Immigration Museum, we will be opening late to pay tribute to the life and work of acclaimed poet Kahlil Gibran with food and music from his home country of Lebanon.

Spoken word artist Nour Abouzeid and DJ and radio host MzRizk (DJ) are curating a stage of poets and performers, who will conduct readings of Gibran’s poetry and perform music inspired by it.

While listening enjoy culinary delights from Gibran’s hometown of Bsharri and further afield within Lebanon. And if making it yourself is more your style, take part in a special markouk and manakish (flatbread) making workshop.

More information about the exhibition:

Kahlil Gibran: The Garden of the Prophet is an exciting new exhibition opening at Immigration Museum celebrating the life and work of literary genius Kahlil Gibran. Gibran's works have inspired some of the most influential figures of our time, from Indira Gandhi, to Elvis Presley, John Lennon and David Bowie.

Gibran’s poignant artistic representations of themes from the The Prophet, which has never been out of print and is published in over 80 languages and dialects, are featured in the exhibition alongside a galley proof and plate that were created pre publishing.

Reflect on Gibran’s world, work and relationships, and rediscover the power and relevance of his work today.

This exhibition is proudly presented by the Bank of Sydney, supported by the Gibran National Committee and has received grant funding from the Council for Australian-Arab Relations of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

You Can't Be What You Can't See - Music Victoria Panel

October 19, 2017

You Can’t Be What You Can’t See. Confidence is one of the main factors behind the lack of diversity and creative output within many areas of the music community.

Aimed at women, people of non-cis male gender and people of colour, this panel is running for the second year as part of Darebin Music Feast and Music Victoria has put together a stellar panel featuring heavyweights within contemporary music and media to unpack and address confidence issues.

This panel will focus particularly on the ways in which people have to negotiate their approach to different spaces being within a marginalised group. How do we approach certain situations dependent on the space we are in? How do we navigate ourselves within these spaces? Discussing physical spaces (gigs / professional environments) as well as internal spaces (isolation within roles / power dynamics / insecurities), the panel will tell stories, share their experiences and relationships to different spaces and provide insights into gaining confidence within them.

We are so lucky to have the following incredible women on the panel:

Bethany Atkinson-Quinton (PBS) – Moderating
MzRizk (DJ) (DJ/Event Curator/Radio presenter)
SIMONA (Artist/DJ/Producer)
Ajak Kwai (Artist)
Sabrina Robertson (Maths & Magic/Native Tongue Publishing)
Kira Puru (Artist/Photographer)

MzRizk spins Hip Hop at the Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait Exhibition

September 19, 2017

Thursday Nights – Hip Hop with DJ MzRizk

8 March 2018

Thursday 6pm to 9pm

Jewish Museum of Australia

Amy Winehouse has described her musical evolution as moving from Jazz, to Soul, through to Gospel, then Motown and finally Hip-Hop. As part of the exhibition, we present a series of evenings that traverse Amy’s vast musical journey, digging a little deeper into the styles of music that informed her complex writing, composition, melody and voice.

Amy’s first foray into hip-hop was as a teenager when she was inspired by her love of Salt-N-Pepa – with her friend, Juliette, they formed their own rap group called ‘Sweet’n’Sour’ (Amy was Sour). Later, embarking on a love affair with R&B and hip-hop, Winehouse shifted her love of hip-hop music into the worlds of Missy Elliot, Nas, Faith Evans, Brandy and Monica. Melbourne based DJ, curator and radio presenter, DJ MzRizk will curate a night of hip-hop tunes by some of Amy’s favourites, as well as some of the fresh hip-hop coming out of the local music scene. MzRizk has supported some of the biggest hip-hop artists in the world including Mos Def, Public Enemy, Jill Scott, The Daptones, Jurassic 5, Talib Kweli and DJ Maseo (De La Soul). Head down to the Museum from 6pm to fill your head with some quality hip-hop before heading into the exhibition.

Thursday Nights are brought to you by us and Hear Them Holler.

**PLEASE NOTE: All ticket holders under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible ticket-holding adult.

*Includes ticket to Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait exhibition.
